Purpose

This is an anonymised civic case file. It documents what one neighbour or group actually did and what happened. It is not a testimonial, not a review, and not marketing.

Timeline

Before

Six households received the posted-sign notice. None had attended a hearing before. A porch meeting was arranged two weeks out.

During

Three neighbours signed up to speak. Each took the three-minute slot with one specific ask: buffer, drainage, lighting.

After

The commission added all three as conditions of approval and asked staff to verify the drainage study before the second reading.

What worked

  • One ask per speaker — never bundled.
  • A printed Hearing Packet with the exact three asks at the top.
  • Showing up early enough to sign the speaker list.

What didn't

  • Trying to also raise traffic on the same night — it diluted the asks.
  • Reading from the Community Brief verbatim instead of speaking from notes.

What we'd do differently

  • Schedule the porch meeting three weeks out, not two — older neighbours need time to plan.
  • Carry a second printed copy of the staff report to hand to the speaker after you.
