Version 1.0 — Founder's Edition

Before They Build is now a stable civic publication. This page marks the transition from beta to first edition.

This is the Founder’s Edition of Before They Build. It is the first version we consider stable enough to put in front of the world without qualification. The Public Beta chip has been retired. Every publication now carries a dated colophon and a stable identifier. Every future change flows through a filed correction, a scheduled review, or an explicit edition ceremony.

The project’s objective has changed. During the beta chapter (Editions 13–15), we were building. Beginning today, we are maintaining. New handbooks will still ship, but through the review discipline that governs the annual cadence, not through constant push.

The philosophy is straightforward: better decisions, not automatic opposition. A prepared neighbor is more valuable than a loud one. A public record is more valuable than a public opinion. This edition is our attempt to make preparation ordinary.

What ships with the Founder’s Edition

Founder’s note

When we began, we imagined a website. What we discovered we needed to build was a publishing house — small, defensible, and worth handing to whoever comes next. This edition is that publishing house at rest, for the first time. It is imperfect on purpose. Every real publication is. What matters is that it is dated, signed, and open to correction. If you find something wrong, we would like to know.
