About the project
Before They Build is a civic publishing house.
We publish free, plain-language handbooks that help neighbours understand and participate in local land-use, permit, and public-records decisions before they are made. The handbooks are written for the kitchen table — not for the lawyer's office, not for the developer's office, not for the planning office. Paid editions package the free handbooks into binders and paperbacks for convenience; they do not unlock information.
We are independent of every party to every local decision. No advertisers. No partisan funding. No advocacy positions on individual projects.
