Before They Build exists because the most consequential decisions in a community — where an apartment tower rises, which wetland is filled, whose street floods next — are made in public meetings that almost no one attends. We do not think this is anyone’s fault. Public participation is difficult by default. Notices are cryptic. Deadlines are short. The vocabulary is legal. The maps are unreadable. The processes assume a preparation the ordinary neighbor has no way to acquire.
We publish a small library of printable reference documents that make that preparation possible. Not everything. Not opinions. Not a movement. A shelf of handbooks and packets a neighbor can print, read in an afternoon, take to a meeting, and hand to the person next to them.
Why records matter
A community that does not keep its own records inherits the records of whoever cared enough to keep them. Usually that is the applicant, the developer, or the agency. Our packets exist so a neighbor can walk out of a hearing with the same paperwork the applicant walked in with — no more, no less.
Why communities matter
The scale at which most zoning, permitting, and environmental review actually happens is the street, the block, the parcel. National conversation is loud; local decision is. We write for the decision.
Why preparation matters
Better decisions require better questions. Better questions require preparation. Preparation requires a place to start that does not assume prior expertise. We are that place.
What we will not do
- We will not oppose individual projects. Better decisions, not automatic opposition.
- We will not host a forum, a comment section, or a social feature. Conversation lives elsewhere.
- We will not carry advertising. We will not sell reader data. There is no reader data to sell.
- We will not send marketing email. Transactional email only.
- We will not add urgency, notifications, or dark patterns.
- We will not publish AI-generated editorial content. The linter flags; it does not write.
What we will do
- Publish handbooks a sixth-grader can read and a lawyer will not fault.
- Publish corrections openly, dated, and celebrated.
- Keep the Beta chapter honored, not hidden.
- Print everything. If it will not print on a B&W laser, it does not ship.
- Answer the reader’s next question, then stop.
The Founder’s Oath
Every publication we release should leave readers more prepared, better informed, and more prepared than when they arrived. We favor clarity over complexity, evidence over opinion, stewardship over novelty, and craftsmanship over speed.
