What this is for

A pocket-sized script for any permit conversation. Five prompts you can read aloud verbatim.

Who it's for

Anyone walking into a counter visit, a phone call with a planner, or a public hearing about a permit.

When to use it

Print before any conversation about a permit. Keep one folded in your binder and one in your wallet.

What's inside

A preview of what prints. The printed output is the deliverable; this is just so you know what you'd get.

The five prompts

  • Identify — I am asking about permit ____, on property ____, issued by ____.
  • Locate the file — May I see the application, staff report, and conditions of approval?
  • Pin the dates — When does the comment period close? When is the appeal deadline?
  • Test the findings — Which code section is this approval relying on, and what evidence supports the findings?
  • Leave a trail — Please send written confirmation of what we discussed today.

Companion to the Understanding Permits handbook. Designed to fit in a pocket once folded in half.

Most common uses

If any of these match what you're working on, this is the right printable.

  • Counter visit to ask about a permit
  • Phone call with an assigned planner
  • Pre-meeting prep before a public hearing
  • Following up after a denial or condition change
  • Helping a neighbor navigate their first call
